The economic value of biodiversity increases as we understand the importance which it represents in the different dimensions of development. However, biodiversity possesses particular characteristics which affect the scope of the methods traditionally used to value goods and services economically, so new more specific methods have been developed (contingent methods, multicriteria systems). What is important however is the application of the values which are calculated for biodiversity during decision making, i.e. during the improvement of economic efficiency in the use and conservation of the biological resources. The projects which are being developed in this area are related to the assessment of methodologies for valuation and their applicability to the resolution of specific problems such as the recuperation of dry forest in the Caribbean, the management of mangroves, the conservation of urban biodiversity and others.
