Production systems and biodiversity

Colombia is a nation with high cultural diversity as it counts at least 80 groups which are considered traditional including indigenous peoples, Afro-Americans and farmers. Each one of these groups constitutes a distinct system of relations with the natural environment in which they have been developing for centuries. These groups therefore represent sustainablity examples, which affect the persistence and evolution of genes, species and ecosystems. On the other hand, various non traditional players, such as the farming guild, the farm industry and biotechnology organizations have different ways of appropriating and incorporating biodiversity to development processes. The Humboldt Institute is developing some research projects aimed at understanding and emphasizing the importance of the natural environment as a source of richness or as a result of its direct or indirect use, or for the services it provides. Within the projects the program develops, there is an assessment of the current state of biodiversity in the Sáliva of the Meta river reserves, a revision of the importance of commerce amongst indigenous groups in Colombia, the design of an economic analysis for biodiversity and production systems methodology and a pilot project of evaluation of ecological functions associated to farming production which is being carried out at the Quindío Region.
