Environmental Exploration and Monitoring Group -GEMA-

The Environmental Exploration and Monitoring Group is in charge of the realization of rapid ecological assessments in priority areas chosen by the Institute, as well as of the definition of taxonomic groups as indicators for this purpose.

In a consulting process with taxonomy biogeography experts on a national level, the Institute set up a workshop in order to carry out biodiversity inventories in terrestrial ecosystems with the aim of selecting priority areas. The criteria used in the workshop included biological relevance (richness and endemism), degree of knowledge, conservation status and threat to biogeographic units.

The following is a list of the explorations carried out by GEMA in the country:

  • Exploration of dry forests in the north of Tolima
  • Biological exploration of the Nukak National Natural Reserve (Guaviare Region)
