Biological collections

The biological collections of the Humboldt Institute have a reference character, which involves maintaining the best taxonomic representation and its geographical variations, although a limited number of individuals are kept from each taxon collected.

Aside from the progressive establishment of the reference collection, which is constituted as a reference and a material backup for the National Biodiversity Inventory, priority is centered around groups and taxa which are or could be used as indicator groups to characterize the importance of biodiversity in specific geographic areas and the conservation status of ecosystems.

This work has begun with studies on coprophages, bees, wasps, ants, spiders (Arthropod collection), birds, small mammals, vascular plants and butterflies.

Classification of Biological Collections

As an integrating process of the available information in biological collections on a national level, the Humboldt Institute develops and supports the creation of an national information database and the classification of the main biological collections in the country.
