Evaluation of the population status of threatened species

The evaluation of the population status of threatened species is based on the identification and categorizing of the elements of fauna and flora in the country which present any type of risk of extinction. The lists made by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are used for this purpose and are adapted for national use. Research on the status of their populations and analysis of conservation options which serve to set priorities in conservation biology is centered around the species included in the list.

Some of the activities in underway are:

  • The making of the "Colombia’s Fauna and Flora Red Book". This is a project which is intended to be ready by the year 2001. Currently, work is done with the Flora of Colombia Red List, the preliminary version of which is open to comments on request. The list of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and fresh water fish is in the process of being made.
  • Research on the natural populations of the Andean condor (Vulture Gryphus) in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The first phase of field exploration, experimentation on observation and capturing techniques and approximation to local communities has been completed. Currently, a second phase of population evaluation and conservation conditions of the species is being planned.
  • Evaluation of the population status of critical elements of threatened flora of Colombia at the Valle del Cauca and the coffee growing regions of the Cordillera Central. The populations which will be evaluated in mid 1998 have already been identified.
  • National Census of Crocodylia, with emphasis on the most threatened species: the Orinoco caiman (Crocodylus intermedius) and the Magdalena caiman (Crocodylus acutus). This census is being carried out with the cooperation of the Ministry of the Environment and work is currently being done on a synthesis document to be published in mid 1998.
  • Program for the conservation of the Orinoco caiman (Crocodylus intermedius), is in the process of being elaborated with the cooperation of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and the Ministry of the Environment.
  • Evaluation of the populations of the Cundinamarca wax palm of (Ceroxilon sassaimae)
