Biodiversity use and valuation program

logger  The Use and Valuation Program has as its objective the research and analysis of the current and potential uses of biodiversity and its role in history. In this sense actions which are intended to identify new products and services derived from biodiversity and their relationship with the productive systems are being carried out as well as evaluation of the costs and benefits (tangible and intangibles) associated with the use of biodiversity and its distribution in the Colombian society.

The Humboldt Institute recognises the importance of biodiversity for traditional indigenous, Afro-American and farmer communities and has therefore carried out the identification and characterization of the resources which are used to elaborate craft products.

Economic valuation is an important tool to assess the distribution of the benefits derived from the use of biodiversity. To achieve this it uses valuation systems based on the information of local, national and international markets, and estimating the actual and potential demand of goods and services derived from biodiversity by industrial actors, the State, its institutions and the general public.
