Biodiversity inventories program

1. General Objective

To coordinate the process of collecting and characterizing elements of biodiversity and their distribution in Colombia.

2. Specific Objective

  1. To organize the existing information on Colombian Biodiversity.
  2. To carry out inventories in poorly known geographic areas and taxonomic groups.
  3. To carry out research on taxonomy, classification and biogeography.

An important part of the existing knowledge of Colombian Biodiversty is backed up by material from national and international biological collections. In this context the Institute has initiated a preliminary diagnosis of the 52 most important collections in the country. From this diagnosis, the Institute has started to support six entities in order to achieve the classification of the information. Additionally contacts with the main collectors on an international level has been initiated with the aim of repatriating such information.

The Institute has also created the arthropod collection, which groups different taxa catalogued up to species level and also contains specific research on insect groups as indicators of biological and ecological conditions.

Finally the Program includes the Environmental Exploration and Monitoring Group (GEMA, for its Spanish initials) which is in charge of coordinating expeditions and field trips to poorly known or important biodiversity areas for biological research.
